Racing Louisville FC on Wednesday unveiled its 2023 Houndstooth Kit, an homage to Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, 50 years after her colt’s iconic Triple Crown run.
Secretariat ran for Chenery’s Meadow Stable and still holds the record final times in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness Stakes. What’s more, Chenery — who was dubbed the First Lady of Racing — was known to wear houndstooth-patterned jackets as she broke barriers in a heavily male-dominated sport.
The Houndstooth Kit is a celebration of pioneering women, the pursuit of excellence and the sport and culture around it that so closely align with Racing Louisville’s home city and state. Racing will wear the lavender and midnight violet kits with a mint-colored crest as its primary uniform for the 2023 campaign. The club will continue wearing its away Mint Kit, unveiled in 2022, when the Houndstooth Kit clashes with the opposing home team’s colors.
Working in conjunction with Frank DiPinto, head of creative at Tampa-based 2nd Ntr, Racing set out to design a kit that conveys Chenery’s grit, determination and resilience — all qualities to which the club and community aspire.
The new kit features midnight violet and lavender colors in a houndstooth pattern, with a midnight violet collar and stripe down both sides under the sleeves. The mint-colored crest pops against the houndstooth backdrop. The four fleur-de-lis and “Racing Louisville Football Club” on the crest are in midnight violet font. Tops will be matched with midnight violet shorts with a mint crest and black socks.
The Houndstooth Kit is on sale online at shop.racingloufc.com with arrival estimated in the next 15-30 days. Kits will be available for purchase at a later date at the Team Store at Lynn Family Stadium, which is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on game days.
The Team Store will alert fans as soon as the jerseys are available should they prefer to purchase now and pick up in person. Youth, women’s and men’s sizes will be available. Shoppers may also customize their jerseys to have their favorite player’s name and number on the back for an additional fee.
Racing Louisville’s new home kits once again carry primary sponsorship from Louisville-based GE Appliances. Three other valued Racing Louisville partners are featured on the new kit: PNC above the name plate, Prüvit below the jersey number and Toyota on the sleeve.
“The new kits are outstanding,” said Pat Denbow, vice president of partnerships. “Our kits are our identity. We are thrilled with the design and execution – and we are proud to have GE Appliances once again front and center. Their commitment in our team and in our community is unmatched. We also have a tremendous amount of appreciation for the support shown to us by founding partners PNC, Prüvit and Toyota.”
Racing kicks off its 2023 campaign on the road, with an NWSL regular-season opener slated for Sunday at Houston. The match will be streamed on Paramount+ and NWSLSoccer.com for international viewers.
Louisville’s home opener is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Lynn Family Stadium. Single-game and season tickets as well as flex packs and other deals are available now at RacingLouFC.com/tickets or by calling 502-568-2489.
