Racing Louisville FC has agreed to terms with another member of its 2022 NWSL Draft class, signing midfielder Savannah DeMelo to her first professional contract, the club announced Friday.
The University of Southern California product DeMelo, selected fourth overall in the draft, inked a two-year deal with preseason training kicking off earlier this week. Her signing follows that of second overall pick Jaelin Howell out of Florida State.
“Savannah is a very talented midfielder with good touch on the ball who can both score and create goals for others,” said Racing’s head coach, Kim Björkegren. “While she has already been called up as a U.S. youth international, I wouldn’t be surprised if we one day see her on the senior team.”
During a collegiate career interrupted by an Achilles injury, DeMelo still managed 75 appearances and helped USC to postseason appearances each year she was on the pitch (2017-2018, 2020-2021). Along the way she four times received All-Pac-12 honors and was recognized in 2018 as an All-American.
The Bellflower, Calif., native DeMelo returned to pre-injury form as a senior in 2021, scoring 4 goals and numbering 7 assists while starting all 20 of the Trojans’ games. USC finished second in the Pac-12 with an 8-1-2 record in league play.
Along with her success at the collegiate level, DeMelo received a number of United States youth national team call ups. She was a member of both the 2016 and 2018 U-20 World Cup squads in Papa New Guinea and France. She has also represented the U.S. at the U-14, U-15 and U-18 levels.
“I am super excited to be part of the team,” DeMelo said of officially joining Racing. “I can’t wait to put everything I can into it and get prepared for the Challenge Cup and the regular season.”
Other members of Racing’s 2022 NWSL Draft class are in for preseason as well to vie for roster spots. In addition to Howell and DeMelo, the club picked Oklahoma State defender Charmé Morgan, Wisconsin goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer, Wake Forest forward Jenna Menta and Georgetown defender Sydney Cummings.
