Aspiring women’s soccer players are invited to showcase their talents in hopes of a Racing Louisville FC roster spot at the club’s upcoming open tryouts.

Ahead of its inaugural season beginning in the spring of 2021, Racing will host the sessions on Jan. 9-10 at its Champions Park training facility site about two miles east of Lynn Family Stadium.

Register now through our youth academy portal, with the $125 fee including a pair of Racing Louisville FC T-shirts to be worn at the tryouts. Attendance will be capped and COVID-19 safety protocols adhered to throughout the event.

Players will get the chance to show off their skills from 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday and again at 9-11 a.m. on Sunday of tryouts weekend.

“We feel this is a very exciting opportunity for the unrecognized talent from across the country,” said Racing Louisville FC coach Christy Holly who, along with club staff, will observe the tryouts in hopes of discovering their next signing. “We place great value in taking the time to identify and evaluate those that we feel would able to contribute to our inaugural season.”

Racing Louisville FC has thus far assembled a balanced team including well-known international standouts, former college stars and recently drafted professionals seeking to expand their roles for the expansion side.

Holly works with James O’Connor, Racing’s executive vice president of development, to build his roster. O’Connor is the former trophy-winning coach of Louisville City FC, the USL Championship side run by the same group launching Racing Louisville FC.

In years past, O’Connor’s tryout pickups have included Kyle Smith, a former NCAA Division III player now with Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC, and Oscar Jimenez, an All-League outside back going on five seasons for LouCity.

“Open tryouts are an excellent opportunity for players who feel they have the talent but have not yet been given a chance to come out and showcase that talent in front of our coaches,” O’Connor said. “With us being an expansion team, we have a number of positions still to fill, so we encourage players to get fit and join us.”

Following tryouts, the National Women’s Soccer League has set a Feb. 1 report date for the league’s players to camp. NWSL competition will begin mid-April with the NWSL Challenge Cup, which will take place in multiple bubble environments, team markets, or some combination of the two before the full 24-game regular season starts in mid-May. The schedule will be released later.

In its first roster move since the recent NWSL Expansion Draft, Racing Louisville FC has signed Swedish midfielder Freja Olofsson ahead of the club’s inaugural 2021 season, it was announced Tuesday.

A 22-year-old youth international currently training with Sweden’s U-23 squad, Olofsson played club soccer most recently for first division side KIF Örebro in Sweden. She will arrive to Louisville next year on a two-year contract.

“Freja’s a very dynamic central midfielder who can cover ground,” said Racing Louisville FC coach Christy Holly, a former U.S. Soccer analyst who has seen Olofsson play in person multiple times. “We feel her physical attributes fit the profile of the type of player that will be successful here.

“She’s someone who we feel has tremendous upside,” Holly added. “We expect to see her representing Sweden fairly soon. We know she’s part of their plans. As a young player, she’s hungry. She’s got developmental work to do along with many other players we’re bringing in. We feel like this is a great platform for the next stage of her career.”

In his post for U.S. Soccer, Holly traveled the world scouting potential U.S. Women’s National Team opponents to prepare for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Olofsson was among the players who stood out, leading to conversations with her and her family before the signing.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this new club, and I consider the move as a great step in my career that will take my game to the next level,” Olofsson said. “I’m impressed by everything I’ve seen so far, and I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates and to start training under Christy Holly. I can’t wait to get started and build something great together with everyone involved in Racing Louisville FC.”

Olofsson shows appearances for KIF Örebro dating back to 2015. Her career was interrupted due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, from which she returned in 2020 to make 21 appearances — 18 of them starts — scoring two goals to go with an assist.

Prior to her injury, Olofsson also played for her country at the U-17 and U-19 levels.

“If she would have not been set back, my thoughts are that she might have made Sweden’s 2019 World Cup team,” Holly said. “Now it’s up to us to push her on to the national team. We knew there were Champions League teams expressing interest in her. We tried to sign her and show how much we valued her by getting this done early.”

Olofsson adds to a core of players transferred via a pre-draft trade with the Chicago Red Stars, forwards Yuki Nagasato and Savannah McCaskill, and forward Cheyna Matthews, who was picked up off the NWSL’s Re-Entry Wire. Racing Louisville FC then acquired the rights to 14 more players in the expansion draft.

The National Women’s Soccer League on Tuesday announced the opening of player registration for the 2021 NWSL Draft, which will stream live exclusively on the NWSL’s Twitch channel at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday, Jan. 13.

The league has also released the current draft order which sees expansion club Racing Louisville FC select first in each of the four rounds. A full draft order is available here.

In order to be eligible for the 2021 NWSL Draft, a player must:

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or a foreign national who is currently enrolled at a university in the United States or was enrolled at a university in the United States during the fall 2020 semester (or quarter), and;
   
• Be a player who has exhausted, lost or renounced their remaining NCAA eligibility, including high school graduates choosing to forego college, and;
   
• Be at least 18 years old by the conclusion of the 2021 NWSL season (Nov. 21, 2021), and;
   
• Not be under a current professional contract nor have previously signed a contract to play professionally; and;
   
• Register for the 2021 NWSL Draft by 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 11.

Players who register for the draft but are not selected will become Discovery Eligible the day following the 2021 NWSL Draft. 

Due to the NCAA spring season in 2021, the NWSL has requested a waiver that will allow student-athletes who register for the NWSL Draft to decide by Jan. 22 if they will report to their NWSL club before or after the spring collegiate season.

If the waiver is denied, players will have the option to either participate in the 2021 NWSL Draft and forfeit their remaining collegiate eligibility if selected or withdraw from the draft registration and play the spring collegiate season. But they will be ineligible to participate in the NWSL during the 2021 season.

Additional NWSL Draft details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Along with its four core selections, Racing Louisville FC will pick at No. 5 in the first round as part of a trade last fall with the Chicago Red Stars.

The National Women’s Soccer League announced Wednesday a new competition framework to be debuted in 2021, expanding opportunities for the athletes of the NWSL to showcase the most exciting, most competitive women’s professional soccer league in the world.

“2021 is shaping up to be another big year for the NWSL as we continue to innovate our product, engage our incredible fans and support our players and teams,” said NWSL Director of Operations and Player Affairs Liz Dalton. “Building on what we were able to safely accomplish in 2020, we’re expanding the opportunities for our athletes and teams to thrive, and for our sponsors and partners to invest in our continued growth.”

Players will report to camp on Feb. 1, 2021, with the first competition coming in mid-April when the NWSL Challenge Cup returns after the historic inaugural edition in 2020. Based on guidance from the NWSL Medical Taskforce and public health authorities, the 2021 Challenge Cup will take place in multiple bubble environments, team markets, or some combination of the two.

“Bringing back the Challenge Cup is an opportunity for our league to continue growing our fan base and showcase our world class players with an exciting and competitive tournament ahead of the most important international tournament on the 2021 calendar, the Olympic Games,” said NWSL Chief Revenue Officer Mitch Poll. “We’re focused on continuing to build opportunities to expand our reach, expose a global audience to the best women’s club soccer in the world, and provide meaningful opportunities for our teams and players to perform.”

Following the 2021 Challenge Cup, the NWSL’s 2021 regular season will kick off in mid-May, with each team scheduled to play 24 matches. The full league schedule will be released at a later date.

Six teams will qualify for an expanded NWSL playoffs set to take place beginning in November 2021, with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye.

The 2021 campaign will end with the NWSL Championship the weekend of Nov. 20 before beginning another exciting offseason ahead of the NWSL’s 10th anniversary season.

From the moment Christy Holly joined Racing Louisville FC as the club’s head coach in August, he has used one word to describe the type of atmosphere he wants for his club: family. Now with rights acquired to 17 players, Holly’s not changing course.

Racing expanded its roster by 14 in Thursday night’s NWSL expansion draft, in which the club selected defender Addisyn Merrick at No. 1 and finished with a bang, closing by picking U.S Women’s National Team stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press. 

Meticulous in his decision-making process, Holly concluded months of conversations with coaches, teammates, agents and the players themselves confident in the group he has assembled. 

“This is a family approach.” Holly told reporters after the draft. “We want to remain true to that.”

Reaching the stars

Racing surprised the women’s soccer world when it acquired the playing rights to Heath and Press, who are both currently signed and playing with Manchester United Women for the 2020-2021 FA Women’s Super League season. 

Only knowing the two were available for a week with the release of the league’s protected/unprotected list on Nov. 5, Holly moved quickly when deciding to add the two-time World Cup winners to his prospective roster. 

“We were shocked that they were available,” Holly said. “With how valuable and how much experience and success they’ve had in their respective careers is something that we thought would be a tremendous addition. 

“We feel like there’s an alignment in terms of their world class abilities and world class ambitions.”

While it’s still unknown if or when the two will be able to join Louisville for the 2021 season, Holly said he’ll emphasize clear communication with their camps as they remain overseas. The FA WSL season runs through early May, and next year the Olympics are scheduled to be staged.

Familiar faces

Thursday’s No. 4 and No. 11 picks — Cece Kizer and Erin Simon — are plenty familiar with Holly. Having worked with Kizer at U.S. Soccer and Simon during his time at Sky Blue FC, Holly knew both of them we’re players he could trust when establishing his team.

“I had a little bit of an insight in terms of what it is I feel that they can offer the club both as players and as people,” Holly said. “That gave me a great deal of confidence in terms of the decision making.”

Holly also had the added benefit of watching Kizer and Simon win the NWSL’s Challenge Cup with the Houston Dash. Both Kizer and Simon played a large part in the Dash’s title, with Kizer bagging a goal in the final and Simon making five appearances totaling 239 minutes. 

Where we go next

With the expansion draft in the rearview, the club can now turn its attention to a yet-to-be-scheduled college draft in early 2021.

Racing holds the No. 1 and No. 5 picks, with Holly saying he’s already in conversations with clubs in the states and abroad to find the players that fit Racing on and off the field. 

“As we sit down and look at the layout of the team both from a tactical, but also a personality standpoint, we feel like there’s still some work to do,” the coach said. “But it’s up to us to strike a balance.

“There’s a long road ahead of us. We feel that we’ve laid a really good foundation.”

A group bought in

In the days leading up to the expansion draft, Holly detailed the “pitch” he delivered to prospective players on Racing Louisville FC. That meant explaining ambition he has for the club, the support from the front office as well as the club’s new facilities, both a training center under construction and recently opened Lynn Family Stadium.

While building out his inaugural roster, Holly is aiming to recruit players who are on board with his mission of making Racing a world-class club. In doing so, he took a personal approach. 

“For some players I sat on the phone for two hours because I wanted to hear their input,” Holly said. “I wanted to hear their opinion. And I wanted to make sure they understand this is just not about Racing Louisville. This is about them, too.

“What we’re doing here is not just about us. It’s a collective foundation of the club and the city. It’s genuine.”

Racing Louisville FC bolstered its roster Thursday night by making 14 selections in the 2020 NWSL Expansion Draft, headlining its haul with a pair of U.S. Women’s National Team stars.

The club — which will make 2021 its inaugural season in the top-tier women’s soccer league — took from Portland Thorns FC the rights to forward Tobin Heath with the 13th pick. At No. 14, Racing rounded out the evening by taking forward Christen Press from Utah Royals FC.

Both Heath and Press are currently playing in England for Manchester United Women. They signed for the 2020-2021 FA Women’s Super League season, which runs through May 9, owing to interruptions to the NWSL playing calendar amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Should Heath or Press return to play in the U.S. next year, their rights belong to Racing Louisville FC.

Racing head coach Christy Holly was permitted to select up to two unprotected players, or one U.S. Allocated Player, from all but one future NWSL rival club. The exception was Chicago, which in a trade last month last month sent forwards Yuki Nagasato and Savannah McCaskill to Louisville in exchange for full roster protection.

“The consistent theme would be that we have very hungry people coming in here with a really desire to prove their point within the NWSL,” Holly said. “As you’ll see with many picks, there’s a high caliber of player. Some are unproven but we have quite a level of confidence in them in terms of the homework and the background digging that we’ve done, so that they can come here and contribute on the field to help us be competitive in everything that we do.”

Racing club chairman John Neace and president Brad Estes flanked Holly during the expansion draft staged in a socially distant format at Louisville’s new Lynn Family Stadium and broadcast live to the NWSL’s Twitch channel.

Aside from Heath and Press, Holly opted to select, among others, two other full internationals, both Australian forwards from the Orlando Pride. Caitlin Foord’s rights were transferred as she plays for Arsenal of the FA WSL, while Alanna Kennedy is on loan to Tottenham Hotspur.

Also highlighting the draft were the selections of forward Cece Kizer and defender Erin Simon away from the Houston Dash, who won the NWSL Challenge Cup over the summer as the league returned to play.

“We’ve been quite diligent about researching every single player from their favorite position, to where they’re most valuable on the field, to the relationships they have off the field, and to what they can bring to the organization,” Holly said. “Overall, we’ve tried to take that very diligent approach and we feel confident that we have hopefully selected the right people.”

Racing’s prospective roster entered Thursday consisting of the forwards Nagasato and McCaskill, in addition to forward Cheyna Matthews, who was claimed off the NWSL’s Re-Entry Wire earlier this month. A rundown below introduces those who joined Louisville via the expansion draft.

Addisyn Merrick (Defender, North Carolina Courage)

Holding the University of Kansas’ school record for minutes played at 2,278, Merrick appeared in all of her college matches. The Missouri native was also a key contributor to the Jayhawks’ 2019 Big 12 Championship, earning all-conference first team and defender of the year honors. Merrick made her NWSL debut in the Challenge Cup after she was selected 28th overall in the college draft.

Julia Ashley (Defender, OL Reign)

The University of North Carolina product, via New Jersey, helped the school advance to the 2018 national title game as a senior. She was selected sixth in the 2019 college draft and played overseas in Sweden and Australia before OL Reign acquired her rights in January. Ashley received multiple U.S. U-23 call ups on her way to a professional career.

Jennifer Cudjoe (Midfielder, Sky Blue FC)

The native of Ghana is a newcomer to the NWSL having joined Sky Blue on a short-term contract for last summer’s Challenge Cup. She brought seven years of international experience to the club, including her 2015 title as Ghana’s Female Footballer of the Year. Cudjoe moved to the NWSL after three all-star seasons for Asheville City SC of the WPSL.

Cece Kizer (Forward, Houston Dash)

The Kansas native left Ole Miss the school’s career leader in goals (48) and points (119) having also won the 2018 Senior CLASS Award recognizing student-athletes who make a positive impact in their communities. First-Team All-SEC in 2015, 2017 and 2018, Kizer then joined the Houston Dash, where she logged 61 minutes en route to the club winning the Challenge Cup’s final. She’s on loan in Norway through December, with her stint including a top-shelf goal scored back in October.

Katie Lund (Goalkeeper, Washington Spirit)

After three years with Texas Christian University, Lund transferred to Arkansas for her final collegiate season, earning All-SEC Second Team honors having posted 11 shutouts in 23 games and leading the conference in save percentage (0.871). The Texas native is versatile having also scored 56 goals during her high school career. She is awaiting her NWSL debut.

Alanna Kennedy (Defender, Orlando Pride)

An Australia native, Kennedy is currently on loan to Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Women’s Super League from Orlando, where she has played since 2017. Kennedy, also a member of her home country’s national team, has appeared in two World Cups, helping Australia advance out of the group stage in 2015. She can play in the midfield as well as on the back line and often takes set pieces for her clubs.

Lauren Milliet (Midfielder, North Carolina Courage)

A four-year starter at Colorado College, Milliet went 14th overall to the Courage in the 2019 NWSL College Draft. She made two appearances as a rookie before getting more involved in 2020, most recently logging 278 minutes in four NWSL Fall Series appearances. Going back to her senior season, she led her school with 17 points, combining six goals and five assists.

Kaleigh Riehl (Defender, Sky Blue FC)

On loan playing for Paris FC in France’s first division, Riehl is in her first professional season having been drafted 11th by Sky Blue after starring for Penn State University. She started all 25 games in 2019 as a redshirt senior for the Nittany Lions and left the program as the NCAA’s all-time leader in minutes played for a position player with 8,847. She has also represented U.S. Soccer at the U-18, U-20 and U23 levels, plus was called into a senior team camp in 2019.

Caitlin Foord (Forward, Orlando Pride)

Foord is currently signed with Arsenal of the FA Women’s Super League in England. Should she return to the NWSL, Racing Louisville FC has her rights. A member of the Australian National Team, Foord represented her country in the World Cup as young as age 16 in the 2011 World Cup. During her globetrotting career, Foord has played within the NWSL for Sky Blue and Portland Thorns; Orlando acquired her rights in January.

Katie McClure (Forward, Washington Spirit)

A third-team All-American in her final season at Kansas University, McClure led the Big 12 Conference last year in goals (17), points (43) and game-winning goals (7). The Spirit selected her with their third-round pick in the most-recent college draft, and McClure made six appearances as a rookie across the Challenge cup and Fall Series.

Erin Simon (Defender, Houston Dash)

Signed by Sky Blue FC following a 2016 open tryout, the New Jersey native Simon was later picked up by West Ham United ahead of the distinguished English club’s entry to the FA Women’s Super League. Having returned to the NWSL earlier this year, Simon appeared in five Challenge Cup games for the Dash en route to the club’s title, starting three of those.

Michelle Betos (Goalkeeper, OL Reign)

A New York native who attended the University of Georgia, Betos continues to rank high on the school’s lists for career shutouts (26) and wins (48). Having entered the NWSL in 2013, Betos was named the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015, a season in which she earned the distinction of becoming the league’s first keeper to score a goal while with the Portland Thorns. Betos finished 2020 on the season-ending injury list after she underwent knee surgery; she is expected to be back for the start of the 2021 season.

Tobin Heath (Midfielder, Portland Thorns)

Heath, a New Jersey native, won three national championships at the University of North Carolina before her USWNT debut in 2008. Since then, she has been part of two World Cup-winning sides and in 2016 set the NWSL record for most assists in a season as a member of Portland Thorns FC.

Christen Press (Forward, Utah Royals FC)

A California native and Stanford University alum, Press is the former Women’s Professional Soccer Rookie of the Year who has registered more than 100 caps since making the USWNT in 2012. Collegiately, she remains Stanford’s assists leader. Professionally, Press ranks fifth on the NWSL’s all-time scoring list.

While preparing to take the biggest step in Racing Louisville FC’s journey thus far, head coach Christy Holly knows exactly what he wants going into Thursday’s National Women’s Soccer League Expansion Draft: a group dedicated to growing with him. 

“Racing Louisville is at the very start of its journey,” Holly told reporters this week. “We need to identify players that align with our journey and have the same desires, ambition, hunger and energy as us to work through this project.”

The draft — which spans 18 rounds beginning live at 7 p.m. on the NWSL’s Twitch channel — offers Holly the opportunity to fill out Racing’s inaugural roster before beginning play in the top-tier women’s soccer league in 2021.

With the release of the NWSL’s protected/unprotected lists late last week, Holly and his team were able to put finishing touches on a plan they’ve spent months developing.

“I think there were only one or two surprises in there,” Holly said of the lists. “So we’ve been quite fortunate that over the last number of weeks and months we’ve been able to dedicate quite a bit of time to preparing for this.

“Ultimately, it was a case of trying to predict what each team was going to do with their players. Then as we go through those protections it’s about finding the players for us that we feel fit what we are trying to do with the organization both tactically and also culturally.”

On Thursday, Racing can select up to two players, or one U.S. Allocated Player, from each NWSL team and two U.S. Allocated players overall. The Chicago Red Stars, however, have full roster protection following a trade deal that landed Louisville forwards Savannah McCaskill and Yuki Nagasato. 

With on-field success beyond year one front of mind, Holly is more invested in building a strong foundation for his club. 

Another expansion draft looms next year as Angel City FC enters the league, becoming the NWSL’s 11th member. Holly will keep that in mind while trying to draft a core group that can develop over time.

“If we can build a foundation that we think is sustainable over a number of years, I feel that would be the more sensible and logical approach,” said Holly, who came to Louisville after working for Sky Blue FC and as an analyst for U.S. Soccer. “(It’s) in order to ensure that we don’t come out of the gates next year, have a good year, but then get ripped apart this time next year (in the next expansion draft).

“I’d be lying if I said I’m happy to acknowledge that history tells us to just sit, take our beatings, and in a couple years’ time be a part of the conversation. We really and strongly wish to be competitive in every single game. We wish to try and learn from people before us to take those lessons and hopefully apply it so that we can make a real good impact in the league from day one.”

The National Women’s Soccer League on Thursday announced the list of players protected by nine clubs in the 2020 NWSL Expansion Draft, with the rest eligible for selection by Racing Louisville FC to bolster its roster ahead of an inaugural 2021 season.

Teams are permitted to protect a total of 11 players/U.S. Allocated Players, which may include up to two U.S. Allocated Players from the 2020 NWSL season. All remaining U.S. Allocated Players must be left unprotected. Individuals on the Discovery List of any team are not eligible to be selected in the Expansion Draft.

Racing Louisville FC may select up to two players, or one U.S. Allocated Player, from each NWSL team, and a total of two U.S. Allocated Players in total from all teams aside from the Chicago Red Stars. Chicago previously sent forwards Yuki Nagasato and Savannah McCaskill to Louisville in exchange for full roster protection in the expansion draft and were not required to submit a protected list. 

In addition, Katherine Reynolds, Jaelene Daniels, Rebecca Tweed and Nadine Angerer have announced their retirement and their playing rights remain with their most recent NWSL club.

Racing Louisville’s selections will be revealed during the 2020 NWSL Expansion Draft starting at 7 p.m. Nov. 12. The event will be streamed live on the NWSL’s Twitch channel.
